Berlari Dengan Sepupu Saya | Running With My Cousin
For Soar.
These photographs explore a reconnection with my birthplace – Indonesia – through family and running. My cousin Afzaal Wibowo, styled in Soar outfits which are vibrant in colour reflective of Jakarta’s exuberance, explored the capital city with my camera and I.
It’s September; although summer shall soon ease into the wet season, the heat is still palpable and the air is extremely humid. Jakarta beats with a relentless yet captivating energy. Amidst the animated life of busy streets are quieter residential pockets. Beginning with a morning warm up in a quaint part of South Jakarta, it was peaceful running through the shade and embracing the colourful front gardens of homes. A natural rhythm forms as one runs through these quieter residential areas. Around noon is the height of Jakarta’s heat; a perfect time to break for lunch with classic Indonesian cuisine – Sate Ayam(Chicken Satay) - before heading to the streets of Central Jakarta.
Driving to Central Jakarta takes time, boundless traffic is non-negotiable for the city dwellers. Runners seek to find places to run without disturbance in their rhythm. We ran in and around the vicinity of Gelora Bung Karno (Jakarta’s sports complex), a place where runners enjoy consistent movement and under the shade from trees. The zealous streets can be heard in synergy with running footsteps and Soar’s colourful outfits. The red sahara cap and racing tee give a nod to Indonesia’s red and white flag. The search for consistent rhythm through running in Jakarta with Afzaal, reminded me to take my time with the sport and enjoy the process.
